Five Common Mistakes Tourists Make in Prague — and How to Avoid Them

Prague through the eyes of tourists

Prague is a magical city, but like any popular destination, it’s easy to fall into some common tourist traps. To help you make the most of your visit, here are five mistakes many travelers make — and how you can sidestep them for a smoother, more enjoyable experience. Just from my experience…

1. Not Planning Ahead

Many visitors arrive in Prague without a plan, thinking they'll figure things out once they get there. The result? Precious time wasted scrolling through Google Maps or flipping through guidebooks instead of soaking in the city’s beauty. The best approach is to do some research at home. If you feel lost, check out my online prep course. Within 90min you can get excellent knowhow. And once you know the real local tips, book concert tickets, reserve tables at popular local restaurants, and outline a rough daily plan so you can hit the ground running.

2. Buying Cheap, Mass-Produced Souvenirs

It’s tempting to grab a quick souvenir from the first shop you see near the Old Town Square, but many of these trinkets are mass-produced and have little to do with Czech culture. Instead, look for authentic local products — hand-blown Czech glass, garnet jewelry, or beautiful handmade crafts from local artisans. Shops like Artel offer unique, high-quality keepsakes that truly reflect Prague’s artistic heritage.

3. Eating at Overpriced Tourist Restaurants

It’s easy to fall into the trap of eating at the most visible, tourist-packed restaurants right next to major landmarks. These spots often have inflated prices and average food. For a more genuine (and often more affordable) meal, venture a few streets away from the main squares. Local pubs, small bistros, and hidden cafés will give you a real taste of Czech cuisine without breaking the bank. Read my top choice of the restaurants where I as a local love going. 4. Forgetting to Check Prices and Exchange Rates

While you don’t want to spend your holiday counting every crown, it’s still smart to be aware of the exchange rate and double-check prices. A bit of mindfulness can save you from overpaying — whether it’s for a taxi ride, a souvenir, or a meal. When in doubt, ask a local or check online to make sure the cost makes sense.

5. Visiting Top Sights at Peak Hours

Everyone wants to see the Charles Bridge, Prague Castle, and the Old Town Square — but most head there at the same time, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. To avoid the crowds, plan to visit these iconic spots early in the morning or later in the afternoon. An early walk along the Charles Bridge or 3pm at the Prague Castle can feel magical and intimate, far from the daytime hustle, and you can still see everything.

Explore Prague the Smart Way

By avoiding these common mistakes, you’ll have a more authentic, relaxed, and memorable experience in Prague. Plan ahead, seek out local gems, and stay mindful of your surroundings — and you’ll discover the city’s true charm without the usual tourist frustrations.
